i've always wanted to grow some, but i'm torn by the possibility it could kill an animal or child. well, not torn, i guess, since i never have ended up buying any of the beans and growing some.

That's another beauty!

But..... dear Val, are you sure you are not exaggerating a little bit? If that stuff is really so deadly how come you see it in parks, big and small, all over France? :faint:

wikipedia to the rescue again :)

[link] - where it mentions that ingesting as few as 3 seeds can kill a child, or 8 seeds will kill an adult. while it mentions that ricin poisoning is not common, at the bottom of the article it says that ricin poisoning kills in 97% of cases, as there is no real treatment for it (though the US military has created a vaccine against it :eyepopping:)

Unbelievable!! Then they must be totally mad to plant that stuff all over the place! ..... or else they don't know......?

it's probably a tradition now, and they don't care about the possibilities... btw, it's all over germany too... i found it growing in G's daughter's backyard, and when i mentioned the poison thing, my step-schwiegersohn immediately ripped it out of the ground (which i wasn't expecting), to protect his son (our grandson!). but i think most gardeners just shrug  and say, "eh.. whatever... hasn't killed ME or anyone I know..."

You know if you have gophers in your yard you can use granulated castor bean oil? Now I know why they head out of the yard when we put it on the lawn. :giggle:
