EDIT: oh well... figured this one out (sort of) by looking at the FAQs and searching keyword "storage" since it wasn't in any of the listed FAQs - anyway... it's an option under management of deviations, so yeah, it's done by the artist themselves, to hide something without actually deleting it. hrm... not sure why someone would want to do that, but hey, different strokes for different folks :)

here's the link: FAQ #307: What is the Deviation Storage Tool, and how do I access it? Can I temporarily hide deviations?:

what does deviation in storage mean? i keep looking through my old faves, and finding several of them have been "stored" away. the interesting thing (other than where the heck is "storage"), is that you can't click on them to remove them from your gallery.
  • Listening to: L Valse des Monstres - Yann Tiersen
  • Reading: Wired Magazine
  • Watching: computer screen - duh.
  • Playing: house
  • Eating: Atkins Bar
  • Drinking: Air

its one thing to put art in storage, for safety reasons, but when they do it and then act like the artworks they put in storage dont exist anymore, is where i take issue with, on an old account, i liked someone's art, but nowadays, its like as if it may as well never have existed to begin with, and its frustrating and sad, i really liked the art that they uploaded....but now its gone forever, and like i said, looks like it never existed to begin with, that and i hate it when anyone puts art in storage, i mean come on, there are other people besides you that may actually like the art you put in storage, its bad enough DA is encouraging elitist crap with now locking off art to non users, but putting art in storage is just as, if not more, annoying and disappointing, i cant even begin to ask for the artist to put back the art they put away, because like i said, its as if the art didnt exist at all, that and they've moved on to other things, i feel disappointed, that and i double hate people putting things in storage, because when i look at a group's gallery, i dont want to effing have to click two or three times to the next page just because its filled with 'in storage' art, it pisses me off, quit being lazy people and just delete the damn artworks, that way you dont clog galleries with art thats in storage, its a waste of space and its teeth grinding annoying >_> that and personally, it leaves me wondering what to do, do i let go of what i once loved because the artist basically ditched it to do other things? or do i make fan art to memorialize it, so that, to me, its never forgotten, i just dont know, i mean, just when i have the answer, the question keeps coming back, yes i fangirl'd over the art a lot, thats why its so hard to stop loving it, or to let go of it, sigh, why, why did they lock away epicness T_T again, its not fair to everyone else when someone puts their art in storage, i guess it doesnt matter anymore who likes what, it could go away at any second and without looking back, basically leaving fans of their artwork to wonder wtf, and to be at a loss for what to say or do, and wondering...why

I hate this.  I put art in my favorites because I want to come back and look at it years later.  This is like a slap in the face.  Some thanks I get for favoriting their works!  :(

I get what you mean, but some artists want to hide things they personally find embarrassing, but they might also want to keep it accessible for themselves for memories sake.

What people are missing here is one fact:

DA has recently allowed art theft.  If you don't know what art theft is, it's basically a term used to describe people who repost art and claim it as their own.  The original term was used for people who would steal famous paintings from museums and either resell them or claim them as their own.  There was a discussion on DA somewhat recently ( about three to four months ) talking about art theft and how it was not a crime according to DA's rules.

If you don't believe me, you can give a look to several journals full of evidence or other things:
The actual DA posts: protectart.deviantart.com/jour…
help.deviantart.com/8/

A journal discussing the truth on the matter: vvlad-vvolfen.deviantart.com/j…

There's even a change.org dedicated to getting a policy about Art Theft: www.change.org/p/deviantart-pl…

Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red Bullet; Red

There's one thing that many artists are doing with storage options.  It's not to displease fans, it's not to do anything like that at all!  I've seen at least 70% of artists who have moved their art to storage in order to combat art thieves.

Admit it.  If you draw as often as most of these popular artists, you clear out your art folder as often as possible.  I draw at least twice a day, and other the span of two weeks, that's at least a minimum of 28 drawings!  Even if you have a large amount of storage and organized it to a tact, you'll still eventually end up deleting those drawings.

Adding it to storage is a great alternative because:
  • If you want to eventually repost the deviation, all you would have to do is move it out of storage.  Unlike scraps or having to re-upload the entire deviation, it's a lot easier to change.
  • You can still view scraps and sta.sh files!  All the person would need is a link to your sta.sh and the scraps page can easily be found under your regular gallery!
People who have their art stolen have to go to desperate measures in order to combat art thieves, and DA is not helping that at all.  They're actually making it worse for artists.  Because really, how would you feel if someone stole your art?  Not so good.  It was a piece that you had worked on for who knows how long, and all of a sudden someone just jumps in and throws your hard work aside.  I wouldn't be too happy about it.

Just because you like the art and it's one of your favorite pieces doesn't mean you can get mad at an artist for placing that art into the storage container.  It's up to them and in the end is their decision.  I've seen people get bullied because they placed their original art into the storage option and either deactivated or was forced to re-enable their works that could easily be stolen again.

"talking about art theft and how it was not a crime according to DA's rules."
What? ... It's illegal in most countries, including USA, so this doesn't make any sense.

This is a crime against the copyright law; it's not part of fair use either.

"was forced to re-enable their works that could easily be stolen again"
Hiding the art is not a solution; and if someone wants to view it, the easy option is to simply go somewhere where the art is stolen.

In the end, theft is illegal regardless of what DeviantART says about it.

I hate that people keeping hiding things, I guess i should just download the images to my computer from now on that i liked, That way i wont have this annoying problem of having to delete things i liked from my favorites just because the artist decide to hide the files.

Hidding things might feel strange for the audience. However there might good reasons for that. For instance: What should the artist do if he negotiates to exclusively sell the artwork. If it can be found here the buyer would complain that it's not exclusive. So the artists hides the artwork first and deletes it if it was successfully sold. For some artworks the artist may think that they might infringe the terms of service of Deviant Art (i.e. because he is not sure if his artwork is porn or not). Until that question is solved he might want to hide it as well.

By the way: does an article exist what kind of art exactly infringes the terms of service? I think porn does, so does poser art which depicts porn too? How about sex with machines? I found some art picturing that, but i am not sure if that is allowed or that just nobody complained yet? Some Mortal Kombat pics remind me of gore ... a lot of blood and decapitations. About this stuff I am not sure either.

I've come across this recently. I was trying to sort out my faves (half are which I find questioning myself if I ever did see them or why I liked them) and saw about two screens full of "stored" deviations. It's a bit bothersome, but it's out of my hands on what happens to them. Sad though. I like looking back at some of the things.

I think the storage feature is stupid. If you don't want it seen then why should be on deviantART servers at all? I understand it when people want to temporarily hide stuff, but they don't. Great works of art are hidden, chances are for good. And the worst part is still being able to see a storage thumbnail for where the deviation was. It's disappointing seeing some of my all time favorite art hidden away.

Yes that drives me asbsolutely insane. I've lost a lot of great pics in my faves because of this crap. It's like, just because you don't like it doesn't mean other people don't still like it, don't deprive everyone just because you're so insecure you can't bear to look at art older than a year old

I think the thumbs shouldn't be visible at all if they're in storage except to the art owner. What's the point in having us see all of these broken thumbs?

I have no solution for you, just some advice for the future: don't trust the cloud.
If you like it, save it to disk.
Do this for everything you like.

PS: If DRM is involved in whatever you like, say an eShop game for your 3DS, don't rely on that.
The problem is, on closed systems like consoles and handhelds it's super difficult to create backups [that work].
Yeah, you can always redownload is what they will tell you, but imagine what happens to your content if the provider goes defunct?
As I said: don't rely on others. And DRM is evil, but I digress.

Agree, I love Zelda and instead of faving fanart I save it in my own computer because like you say I don't trust clouds, I would do that for evevery fave here but I don't want to imagine the time and space that would take.

o_o what a coincidence, I learnt how to download digital games for the WiiU and did so for the very first time yesterday, and  you answered this old comment of mine with that example, hope it's not a sign xd
And I agree, that's why online games and digital versions instead of solid games never appealed to me at first, but it's so common now (and cheaper and quicker too I admit) that I can't help but to join in I gess.

well this is old, I think the reason, at least in my case, is that you don't want it publicly in your gallery for some reason (in my test WIP renders that aren't relevant or final renders that have become obsolete) but that you don't want to delete in case anyone inquires about your old work or in case you want to set up a timeline of your works at a later time but you don't want to show them until then or at any other time.

Well, as I said that's at least why *I* store things, and I do believe others have similar or identical reasons for it as well.

Yeah, this journal entry is one of the first results when you google "Deviation in storage". That's how I found it, because storing deviations makes no sense. I'm also too paranoid to remove them from my favorites on the off-chance they'll be taken out of storage and be visible again. ^^;

You can go into your gallery and "store" any of your works..

This means they are still on DA servers but inaccessible to the general public..
The option has been there for years but only is becoming known because now stored deviations cant be seen in collection folders.

The sheer numbers of people choosing to "hide " this or that indefinitely is just queer i tell you...( not the "gay slur" "queer" ...the real "queer" like a woman dressed in a parka in hot weather walking a dog with a pair of men's purple jockey shorts on it's head and it must wait to be dragged forward periodically by the slow moving woman because the dog can't see. ) ( or even "queer" like the fact we call a single unit of underwear "a pair" when we each only have one crotch to cover.)

Quite lame really ....If you don't care or are paranoid enuff to hide your works ...then by default your work should be removed from collections altogether forcing one to contemplate the loss of favs as opposed to turtle-ing up.

If you don't want your work seen then just friggin' delete it.

The only legitimate reason for turtle-ing i can think of is someone accuses you of copyright infringement on a print you are selling and so you take it off the market until the issue is resolved, not wanting to lose the works stats until it can be put back up.

Plus ........allowing DA access to your works but no one else has always made DA seem a little seedy...
